IPA's ReelColour meets the demands of contract print proofing at Barrow-in-Furness

Cumbrian Newspaper Groups' new print site at Barrow-in-Furness has installed a ReelColour computer-to-proof system from IPA Systems Ltd.

As publishers of The Evening Mail in Barrow and contract newspaper printers, it was felt a recent surge in work for their press required additional proofing facilities.

James Haney, Press Manager, said "We recently installed a new Solna D400 press at a green field site in Barrow, this has resulted in much higher volumes of contract print work. The need to produce accurate press-profiled proofs was essential to maintain the high standards we currently achieve".

At Barrow, ReelColour works as an integrated part of IPA's PrintExpress workflow software which is used to produce both the internally published titles and handle the movement of work between Barrow and Carlisle.

The press-profiled proof, printed on newsprint reel-ends, is produced automatically from the bitmap that is used for final output, thus ensuring faithful reproduction on the press.

ReelColour takes a Tiff file from either RIPs or workflow systems and applies a pre-set press profile for output on HP DesignJet printers. As well as colour balance, all aspects of the final output are reproduced on the proof including screen angles, screen rulings and halftones. It will also show problems with the image such as moiré and poor highlights and shadows.

By guaranteeing data integrity, ReelColour has been proven to reduce customer credits.
