MGS 3

MGS3 is a PostScript productivity tool offering a graphics database, OPI server, print spooler, e-mail notification, load leveling, network routing, PostFlight PostScript error checking, plus remote monitoring and administration capabilities using a standard HTML Web browser.

OPI server: As an OPI server, MGS3 greatly reduces network traffic and speeds the transmission of finished pages. Documents that previously required long periods of time to print will now release from the workstation in a few seconds, allowing editors and graphic artists to get back to work more quickly.

Print Spooler: As a print spooler, MGS3's informative user interface displays the status of print queues, RIPs, and imagers. Auto-polling of Rips, prioritization of input queues, automatic load leveling of jobs sent to the Rips, and e-mail notification of job completion is also available. Transferring of jobs between spool-queues is accomplished with the use of one-button toggling between spool-only and spool-and-print. Drag-and-Drop allows the user to move print jobs between spool-queues. This includes the option of selecting more than one job at a time.

Graphics Database Server: As a graphics database server, MGS3 speeds document construction and simplifies file server maintenance. MGS3 client software allows users to quickly locate their images, and retrieve low resolution versions for use in page makeup. Using the client, images can easily be marked for back-up, archiving, or deletion. MGS3 also provides network routing, allowing traffic generated by the transmission of high resolution graphics and PostScript pages to be isolated on dedicated network segments.

Many end-users need total redundancy in the equipment used to print their publications. Dual MGS option for MGS3 maintains an up-to-date back-up of all the images in the image database and all of the spoolers created for the print server. Both of the MGS3 workstations are active, which not only doubles the power of the system, but either platform can take-over in the unlikely event of problem. The operator/administrator instigates a simple, quick and seamless "fail-over" procedure so that the single MGS3 can take over all of the OPI Server/Print Spooler/Graphic Database functions.

Features

  • Graphical User interface
  • Database Management of Picture Storage
  • Accepts Pictures in EPS, DCS, TIFF, and DCS JPEG formats
  • Helios Ethershare providing file sharing, print spooling and network zoning
  • Supports EPS, DCS, DCS2, TIFF (incl. LZW, PackBits & CCITT Group 3 & 4 compressions).
  • Makes available the information that allows report-generation by a third-party.
  • Creates a RGB thumbnail from an EPS image.
  • Converts low-resolution to CMYK when the high resolution image is RGB.

Options

Auto Polling: MGS3 can be configured to find the first available RIP and route the current job through that RIP.

Load Levelling: To optimize system throughput, Load Levelling assigns each print job to an available RipExpress within a group, after comparison of the output queues on each RIP. This option would normally be used on systems where Laserplex is also installed allowing a specific recorder to be used by the selected RIP.

Priority Queuing: Allowing print queues to be assigned different priority levels.

PostFlight error checking: When pages are printed to MGS3, a copy of the PostScript file is kept and the progress of the original through the selected RipExpress is monitored. If no PostScript error occurs, the file copy is deleted. If a PostScript error is detected then the copy is sent to the PostFlight error checker where a more detailed description of the error is produced. The user can be notified of the error by E-Mail.

Client Interface: Available for either Macintosh or PC to allow search and browsing of the picture database. This can be used either alone or in conjunction with Extended Low Resolution.

Client Server Interface: This resides on the Sun and provides the interface for the PC or Mac clients as described above. This is required in addition to the Client Interface software.

E-Mail Notification: Allows the sender to be notified electronically upon the completion of their print job. MGS3 can be configured to report on the successful completion of a job, on an error in a job, or both.

Extended Low Resolution: Allows a structure of low resolution picture directories to be created, each of which stores the low res images for a particular database classification and sub-classification.

Dual MGS3: The tasks of MGS3 can be shared across two Sun platforms to both improve performance and provide against a platform failure.

PowerLink: Provides SQL database and tracking facilities.

Remote Monitoring: Remote monitoring and administration is now possible from virtually anywhere in your network. Using a standard HTML browser for the World Wide Web, users and administrators can view queues and log files, as well as control many of the functions of the MGS3 server.
